Why You Feel Awkward in Photos (And How to Fix It)

Updated: 5 days ago

If you feel awkward in photos, you’re not the only one. It’s one of the most common things people say before a session.“I don’t know what to do.”“I never like photos of myself.”“I just don’t photograph well.”

It sounds personal. It usually isn’t.

It’s Not You (Most of my clients feel awkward in photos!)

Most of the time, feeling awkward in photos has very little to do with how you actually look.

It usually comes down to a few things:

  • No direction

  • Feeling rushed

  • Being overly aware of yourself

If you’ve ever been told to just “act natural,” you already know how unhelpful that is.

Being in Front of a Camera Is Not Natural

Let’s be honest.

You’re being asked to:

  • Stand still

  • Think about your posture

  • Manage your expression

  • And somehow make it all look effortless

Of course it feels awkward.

That doesn’t mean you are.

Most People Haven’t Been Guided Properly

You are not supposed to know:

  • What to do with your hands

  • How to stand

  • How to shift your expression

That’s not your job.

With the right direction, small adjustments make a big difference.A slight shift in posture.Where you’re looking.

How your expression changes between frames.

None of it is complicated when someone is guiding you through it.

What Actually Helps You Feel Comfortable in Photos

If you want to feel more comfortable in photos, it usually comes down to a few simple things:

  • Clear direction so you are not guessing

  • A relaxed pace so you can settle in

  • Small adjustments instead of overcorrecting

  • A few minutes at the beginning to get comfortable

Most people don’t need more time. They just need the right approach.

The Moment It Clicks

There is usually a point during a session where things shift.

You stop thinking about what you’re doing. You stop overanalyzing.

And it starts to feel easier.

That is when the best images happen.

What It Comes Down To

If you’ve ever thought,“I just don’t look good in photos,”

It’s probably not you.
